Let’s Talk About the Midterms

For a while now I’ve been asking the questions, “How did we get here? How is this possible?”  While I’ve adjusted in some ways to how living in the U.S. has changed since January 2025, I still continue to be shocked on a daily basis. In the past weeks, these questions have felt particularly weighty with the attacks on Iran and unfolding events in the Middle East.

There are so many different answers to these questions, and it’s tempting to go back in time and try to make mental corrections. As if thinking about where we went wrong long enough will somehow change the reality we now live in. Then that famous line hits me – The only way out is through – and I remember that we must move forward. I start looking for windows of opportunity. How can I, along with others, change our country’s trajectory?

One answer that comes up again and again is to Flip the House.* That is, to achieve a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives in November. A Democratic majority in the Senate would be icing on the cake.

While the LAST day to vote in the midterms is November 3rd, we are already in primary season. The time to get involved is now.

You might say, “Sure. That sounds great, but the midterms aren’t until November. What can I do now?”

The midterm primaries have already begun. They started on March 3rd. You might have heard about the senate primary wins of James Talarico in TX and Roy Cooper in NC last week. In order to Flip the House, the groundswell of support for Democratic candidates and efforts to ensure free and fair elections need to start now. If we all wait till November gets close, it will be too late.

Here’s the good news: There are many ways we can start building that critical groundswell of support now. Pick one thing to do first, no matter how small it feels. Help change this country’s trajectory with House (and Senate) majority wins.

Have fun with your neighbors and write postcards to voters

Join MMI for regular postcard-writing events or start your own with friends, neighbors, or other communities. Progressive Turnout Project supplies postcards for these types of gatherings. You provide the stamps. These gatherings are a lot of fun and great opportunities to get to know people or just hang out with the people you already know and like. Check the MMI Events page for our upcoming postcard-writing sessions.

Frontload your donations/Start a recurring donation now

Donate early and often. Donating to candidates as elections approach is great, but donating earlier helps them jumpstart their campaigns. Start a recurring donation now, no matter how small. If you’re not sure where to give, donate to the Flip the House Fund at SwingLeft. This allocates money from your donation to the most competitive districts, depending on how it can be used most effectively.

Join MMI and Indivisible Somerville for Phonebanking and Textbanking

If you’ve never done phone or text banking, that’s no problem. Training will be offered and there will be group members available to answer questions. We will be doing banking activities from now until the midterms.

Travel to nearby districts

Join MMI and some of our partner organizations as we travel to districts in nearby states, including Maine, New Hampshire, and New York. This is another fun way to get to know others in our communities while doing good work.

Join MMI’s Voting and Elections group

The effort to Flip the House (and the Senate) needs a lot of people power starting now. Join us at MMI and help our Voting and Elections group grow.

Between now and November, we will continue to post updates about how MMI and our partner organizations are working to support Democratic wins in the House and Senate. Contact us anytime to find out more.

*You might ask, why focus on the House? Why not the Senate? What about local races? At this point, we are closer to flipping the House than the Senate. Achieving Democratic majorities is possible in both houses of Congress, but many experts say the House is a more likely win. What would flipping the House do to change the direction of the country? It would provide a much-needed check on the Presidency. House committees can launch investigations and issue subpoenas. The House can defund specific executive initiatives or demand policy concessions in exchange for keeping the government open. It could affect election integrity in the 2028 Presidential Election. In addition, a House majority is necessary to pass:

Local and state races are critical as well, but they will not have the same impact on national politics, including the actions of the executive branch (the President and Cabinet).
